Theme: Surface
Description: This two-day, vertical dance workshop will explore movement through the lens of “surface.” Starting with contact improvisation, we will focus and heighten the awareness and sensitivity of the surfaces of our bodies and the way we contact the surfaces around us. Whether those surfaces are the floor, the wall, the harness or other bodies, we will embark on a playful exploration of the world around us. Using the rope and harness, we will move on the wall on the floor and in partnership with other dancers.

About the artists:
Bianca Cabrera (they/she) is an Oakland,CA based director, performer and educator. Cabrera has directed the dance company Blind Tiger Society since 2012, touring throughout the US. Her two decade performing career includes work with KT Niehoff/LingoDance, Jo Kreiter/Flyaway Productions, Kim Epifano/Epiphany Productions, Ben Levy/LevyDance, among many other artists.

Roel Seeber is an Oakland based dancer and artist who holds an MFA from the University of Washington. For the past thirteen year he has dedicated himself to vertical dance or rope and harness-based dancing primarily with Bay Area vertical dance pioneer BANDALOOP. 17:00 - 17:30 Between commercial and Art
Speaker:  Ida Frost

Description: How can we combine an artform with a commercial form? And what does it at all mean to be an artform and a commercial form. Is it the money contributor, that defines what is what? Can we and if so how do we stay in and with our craft in the meeting with an already given aesthetic, dramaturgical line or functional requirement.
17:35 - 18:05
Theme: Microgravity - Space travel storytelling towards agency and empathy.
Speaker: Esther Wrobel

Description: In microgravity, Vertical Dance is used to share astronaut like experiences with participating audience. The choreography is considered to be an Action Performance which means that it is -   A choreography of a participatory experience where the body and imagination are put into action*. The project is also a study case of cross disciplinary research and art work. We will also discuss, how can a creative discipline become a tool for asking and answering questions? and for meeting other disciplines and artists ?
